Join in on the celebration in preparation for the 6th Annual Duck Jazz Festival!  All week long there is music, food, and fun throughout the streets and shops of duck!  Follow the Town of Duck’s website to stay on top of the latest schedule of events!  Locations include Aqua Restaurant & Spa, Coastal Cravings, Urban Cottage, The Blue Point, and more!  Scarborough Faire Shopping Village in Duck NC is kicking off Jazz Festival Week with its own Special Free Live Concert scheduled from 3 to 7 pm on Thursday, October 4, 2012, Rain or Shine.   Appetizers, Wine & Cocktail Beverages will be available for purchase at Elizabeth’s Café.  Follow the link above and make the most out of this Jazzy October Event Week!

The first annual Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival is coming!  Come out and hear that old familiar twang, in the tradition of Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs!  Come hear today’s Bluegrass stars, such as Rhonda Vincent and Doyle Lawson picking their strings outside, under crisp October skies.  They’re bringing ’em in from all over the country for three days of down home cookin’ and good ole Southern pickin’.  Join for a fun filled family weekend with the music of our roots, the music of our grandfathers, the music of America ……. Bluegrass!

ESA contests are organized at the grassroots, district level on a year round basis.  Each District conducts four or more contests per year, and each year the ESA has over 150 competitions along the entire East Coast.  The Virginia District schedules six contests each season.

Every Saturday in October from 10am until 4pm, Island Farm is hosting a pumpkin patch and ox-drawn hay ride.  Hayrides are scheduled for 10:30am-12:30pm and again at 1:30pm-3:30pm.Other activities offered are candle making, make your own corn husk doll, scarecrow stuffing, children’s 19th-century toys and games, and a photo booth set-up so families can take their own photos.  Admission $6; children ages 5 and under free.  Additional fee of $4 to pick out a pumpkin to take home. On the last Saturday of the month, wear your Halloween costume to the farm and take home a surprise.

Oink – yum!  Oysters – yummy!  Don’t miss the food and fun that this roast will offer – music, drink, oysters and BBQ – sounds like a fantastic time to me!   The roast is being held on Saturday, October 6 from noon to 4 p.m. at Longboards Island Grill in Kitty Hawk.  The First Flight Marching Band will perform at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. and volunteer at the event.  Head on out and get your grub on!

Where: National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center on Roanoke Island, Manteo, NC 27954
Roanoke Conundrum—Fact & Fiction, an international symposium, will be held Oct. 6-10 in the auditorium of the new National Wildlife Refuges Gateway Visitor Center on Roanoke Island. The symposium and all related events held that week are free and open to the public and are part of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of The Lost Colony.  The program is designed as a gathering of scholars from around the world to discuss from their own unique perspectives the remarkable emergence of new research about Sir Walter Raleigh’s explorations & settlements in the 1580s and the “The Lost Colony.” A total of 20 presenters – 10 from the fields of arts, culture & government and 10 history and science scholars – will explore the historical facts, new discoveries & how the arts interpret history in many different forms. Archaeologists will be digging at various sites in an effort to find more evidence of early colonists. Free public tours & exhibit of earlier finds in Fort Raleigh Museum.

Get your pumpkin picking ready for the 6th Annual Nags Head Elementary School Pumpkin Fair on Saturday, October 6 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Choose from pumpkins, pie pumpkins, small, medium and gigantic pumpkins, white pumpkins, Cinderella pumpkins, and more.  Other fall items for sale will include mums, gourds, straw bales and Indian corn.  Plan to stay as there will be much more to do than pick pumpkins!  Behind the school there will be fall-themed games and activities for the kids.  Enter to win raffle prizes and make bids on the auctions!  Enjoy a barbecue, hot dogs, treats and a bake sale.  Proceeds will go to the Nags Head Elementary School PTO.

Southern Shores Realty is a proud Alto Sponsor of the 6th Annual Town of Duck Jazz Festival, being held this year on Sunday, October 7.  This is a FREE, all-day Outer Banks event that  begins at 11:00am with gates opening at 10:00am.  All week long, the town of duck celebrates the Jazz Festival with activities that can be found here – Town of Duck Jazz Week Events.  Currently scheduled to perform are The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman, Paula Athertson, The Fuzz Band, and Emme St.James & Her Jazz Gentlemen.

Presented by Kitty Hawk Kites, this competitive fly is on the Eastern League Circuit for sport kite flying and is also sanctioned by the American Kiting Association.  Throughout the weekend, non-competitors can enjoy workshops, demonstrations, and kite making for kids.  The highlights of this event include graceful kite ballet competitions set to music, and fast-paced team flying that blends both kite control and speed.  There will also be an indoor competition!

Refuge staff and volunteers offer you the experience of a lifetime!  Come and learn about the endangered red wolf during a short presentation and journey to the heart of the refuge for an adventurous attempt to hear the haunting sounds of our captive red wolves.  The program will occur except with lightning, heavy wind or rain, or impassable road conditions.  Registration is required – call 252-216-9464.  Summer Howlings cost $7 per person. Children 12 and under FREE!

2 full days of incredible music and creative art, great food, craft beer and fine wine at Mike Dianna’s Grill Room at Timbuck II Village in the beautiful town of Corolla on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  The Mustang Music Festival is a family friendly event.  Kids 12 and under are admitted free.  There will be ear plugs available for young children and also a children’s area with face painting, wild mustang rides, cut-out horse painting, a tye-dye t-shirt station and more! Corolla Shuttle will be providing rides to and from the festival for just $5 all weekend long with stops in most Corolla neighborhoods, the Hampton Inn, Duck and Southern Shores/Kitty Hawk.  Just pay once, and ride all weekend.  Exact pick-up and drop-off locations will be available soon!!

This first annual event will be held at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum, Creef Boathouse with boats on display in Creef Park and along the piers to the lighthouse.  The show will start on Friday evening with the boats arriving and a light social for participants.  Saturday will include the judging, rides in the Museum’s shad boat, and dinner and awards around 6PM.  Awards will be given for various categories.  The event is open to all wooden boats.  The registration form is available at the Museum or calling or e-mailing the museum – 252.475.1750 or sailing@townofmanteo.com.  All proceeds benefit the Museum’s Youth Sailing program.  Exhibiting boats will be judged on owner-built/restored or professional built/restored.  Awards include the “People’s Choice Award” and the “H.A. Creef Award”, a perpetual award that is presented to the best overall boat.

Outer Banks Restaurant Week each Fall and Spring brings an exciting opportunity to enjoy local fare.  Outer Banks Restaurant Week was created for you because we know you love The Outer Banks and you love to eat!  This week gives local food enthusiasts and visitors an opportunity to enjoy 3-course, price fixed lunch, and/or dinner menus at several participating restaurants throughout the Outer Banks at a fixed price of either $20 or $35. (Sales tax and gratuity are not included). They are also featuring a special event; The Outer Banks Chili Cookoff, on Sunday, October 28th Noon-3pm at the Coastal Provisions Southern Shores parking lot.  This is a fantastic way to get out and enjoy the Fall air and flavors!

We love family traditions at The Elizabethan Gardens, and Harvest Hayday is one of our fall favorites! This daytime event combines all the colors, flavors and fun of fall. Whether it is the hayride or hale bale maze, we have families that look forward to this event all year. Activities include: stuff a scarecrow, educational stations, face painting, educational crafts, hay bale maze, hay rides through Gardens, Miss Mum and Mr. Chrysanthemum King contest, music, story time, games as well as hot cider, pumpkin pie and bonfires to warm your heart.

For this event you’ll need your all-American denim, with an added touch of sparkle if you care, and you’ll be right at home for Diamonds & Denim held from 6:30 – 11pm.  Enjoy the flavor and fun of fall in this casually elegant fundraising dinner dance.  Wear your blues and dress it up with your favorite sparkling jewels to enjoy a hay-kicking good time with a live dance band, food, silent and live auctions combined with romantic harvest moon hay rides.  The event is taking place after the Harvest Hayday celebration and individual tickets for Diamonds and Denim are $65 each.  Tickets are available by contacting The Gardens at 252-473-3234.  Donations for the silent and live auctions are also welcome.
